Girls basketball: KML loses to DSHA in OT

Kettle Moraine Lutheran stayed even with Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) through regulation and one overtime before the Dashers broke the game open in a second overtime to win 67-60 Nov. 20.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran scored the first four points but the Dashers Rachel Heinrich answered with a three-point basket at the 15:52 on the way to a game high 17 points. Ovi Young then gave the Dashers a 5-4 lead on a basket a few minutes later. Divine Savior held a 17-12 lead following a basket by Young with 8:48 left before halftime, but the Chargers rallied and entered halftime with a 24-20 lead following baskets by Payton Schneider and Lyndsey Soderbeck.
Divine Savior scored nine straight points midway through the second half and held a 38-30 lead following a three point basket by Heinrich. But Kettle Moraine Lutheran answered with layups by Alyssa Shipley, Sydney Rossow and Emily Frey, and tied the score on a short basket by Amanda Porth. The teams then stayed within three points of each other until the end of regulation,with both teams tied at 48-48. Rossow sent the game into the first overtime by converting a free throw with 1.4 seconds left. The teams then stayed within a basket of each other during the first overtime.
A layup by Young started a 9-1 run for the Dashers in the second overtime to secure the win for the Dashers.  Soderbeck led Kettle Moraine with 14 points while Shipley added 13 points for the Chargers.
Afterward, Kettle Moraine Lutheran Coach Jason Walz said the opener was “a good first game” as the team was tested by DSHA, which is the defending Division I state champion. He added that it’s “always good to have possessions that matter.”
He also said the first game of the season was “a glimpse of what we can be.”
